This is for my friend Colin, who is indeed a teacher and does indeed abhor the word 'got'.
Personally, I have no problem with it. However, since being admonished for excessive verbal use of 'got', I find myself creeping back through passages to change:
- got back to arrived back
- got it from to bought it from
- hadn't got it to hadn't understood it
Inexplicably, I've also started replacing the word 'if' with 'whether' in any sentences asking 'if whether you got understood it?'
If, like me, you're now turning slightly neurotic over the use of the word 'got', check out Grammar Girl's post: Is "Got" Proper English?
It'll make you feel better. Promise.
