Moto Africa Life

Hi everyone. Most of you know that I drive a motorbike in Rwanda. I have a friend, Asha, who does the same in Cameroon. It's not common to see female bikers in Africa so there's a bit of camaraderie. She just released this video and it's such a good one. You'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll restore your faith in humanity. Please show her some love with likes and subs.

Inyoni Hotel in Gisenyi

I recently went up to Gisenyi in north-west Rwanda. My friend has just opened a new hotel there and it was lovely. Had a stunning view of Lake Kivu and a very well-stocked bar. If you're heading in that direction, use my code WriterInRwanda10 for a 10% discount on room booking. It's a really nice get-away from the city. Check out Inyoni on Instagram and their website.

My First Live Stream!

I did my first ever live stream last night with the lovely Margaret Pinard and Books, Songs and Other Magic. Thank you both for being so welcoming and gentle with me. Think I settled into it after sorting out the sound issues and topping up my wine. Here's the full discussion:

Agitation August Interview

Had a lovely time talking to Margaret Pinard on her YouTube channel last night. As part of Agitation August I was talking about a book that really shook me up. I chose Emergency Sex: True Stories from a War Zone which had a huge impact on me when I first moved to Rwanda. We talk about everything from the state of international development, to youth unemployment, and the meaning of life - just small things. There's a lot more laughs than I make that sound! Turn on the live chat replay for extra entertainment, and if you could lightly bother the like button, it would be much appreciated.

Agitation August Lineup

Just another quick post about Agitation August, discussing books that really shook you up over on Margaret Pinard's YouTube channel. This is the lineup for this week and I thought a few of you might find Tuesday's chat interesting: How to Resist Amazon, and Why. Certainly a tough one for authors and book lovers alike.

I'll be there on Friday at 10 am PDT/6 pm GMT/7 pm CAT hanging out in the chat and talking about Emergency Sex, a book that certainly shook me up when I first started working in international development. Video link here.

Look forward to seeing those who can make it.

Agitation August

Yikes! I forgot to post about this to my blog. Managed all the other social media outlets but forgot this one. Definite socmedia burnout.

My friend Margaret Pianard is hosting Agitation August all this month over on her YouTube channel. She's interviewing lots of readers and authors about books that really shook them up and changed the way they see the world. Go subscribe and hit notifications to follow along. You can also play book bingo (see the video above) for a chance to win $75 in book tokens. Well worth watching.

I'll there on 22 August at 10 am PDT, 6 pm GMT, 7 pm CAT talking about Emergency Sex: True Stories from a War Zone, which had a profound effect on me when I first arrived in Rwanda. I'll also be hanging out in the chat to answer questions and just say 'hello.'

See you over there!

Kigali Catch-up

Doing a mammoth catch-up on the past two months in Rwanda. Sharing snippets of life from Guy Fawkes Night, to concert tuning a piano, to the cake we couldn't cut. Plus some ideas of things to do and places to go.

Thursday, 1 August 2024

Romantic poets didn't tend to have long careers. Keats died in 1821, Shelley the year after in 1822, and Byron two years after that in 1824. They were aged 25, 29 and 36 respectively. Yikes!

Also exploring the poetry of James Hogg, with a lovely reading by Alan McClure in the original Scots.

Check out his YouTube channel Tales Fae the Shed, and his children's book Callum and the Mountain.

Huge thanks also to my friend Jan for her help translating to English.

If you have a YouTube channel, feel free to join in. If you don't have a channel, you can always drop your answers in the video comments.

On the Road Again... European Road Trip

Hi guys. Following on from my Rwandan Road trip, I'm now on a trip around Europe (and possibly Morocco). Off exploring the world, seeing new things, eating new (and sometimes odd) things. You can find the full playlist here, including a bit of pre-departure prep in Rwanda before I left. But I'll add a selection of my favourite videos below. Keep checking back over the next few weeks to see more. Also, if you enjoy my videos, I'd hugely appreciate a like, comment and subscribe. Those things really help to promote the videos and get the channel out to new viewers.

A day exploring English churches near my home
village, and a traditional craft fair.

A day playing on the beach with my cousin, Tamsin
(you can follow her here).

Rwandan Road Trip 2023

Hi guys. I'm going to start a massive catch-up of book reviews shortly, but the start of this year has been a bit crazy and I wanted to share a little road trip around Rwanda I went on with friends.

Patchwork Second-hand Bookshop

My lovely friend Maja, in Gisenyi, told be about a second-hand bookshop that has just opened in Kigali, so I decided to go and take a look. It turned out to be the most delightful place. Home-made fudge, big mug of coffee and hours of book-browsing on a rainy afternoon. If you're ever in Kigali, check it out.
